I was raised in the part of the city that had a slew of Italians. Most of my friends had vowels at the end of their surnames, and when I recollect the past, my strongest friendships were with Italians. My bloodline can be traced back to Calabria.
The neighborhood I grew up in was also a tough one. Back then, in the 80s, masculinity was key. I’m not joking around when I tell people I’ve been in 109 fist fights. We did not fuck around. But Genova, at that time, was part of the Crown of Aragon (like Naples, Sardinia and Sicily) which, together with Kingdom of Castilla, became Spain, in 1469, via royal marriage.

Genoa didn’t come under the de facto rule of Spain until 1528, when Andrea Doria was Doge.
